  Sea Kayaking

sea kayaking

Peace, solitude, wildlife, exploration, sociable and challenging are just a few words you're bound to hear when sea kayaking is mentioned.

Personally, I can't think of another activity that can offer so much variety or appeal to so many people at whatever level they wish to take it to. The way in which you can chose whether a weekend away sea kayaking is to relax and sooth, or challenge and thrill - depending on where you go and how you plan it - is fantastic.

To get the most out of sea kayaking is not just a matter of being able to handle a sea kayak in a variety of conditions. You need to be able to navigate, understand the weather, understand and predict the tides and be aware of safety and rescue techniques.

Getting started

There are many areas of the UK coastline that are sheltered and do not have much tidal action. In good weather these are great places for people to start their sea kayaking. As experience and knowledge is gained more adventurous areas can be explored, and off the UK coastline we have some of the most challenging tidal races (where sea water moves at speeds up to 12 knots producing large standing waves) in the world. They can be incredible to paddle in, in the correct conditions.

To gain the knowledge there are many ways to learn. Going on a recognise course is a good place to start, and at Glenmore Lodge there are courses and expeditions to suit all levels. There are many good books on the market and the British Canoe Union is a great source of information. They can direct you to your nearest club and they'll also have details of any sea kayaking events, workshops and tours taking place around the UK.

If you have your own equipment then all the above methods of getting out and learning more are available to you. If you do not have the gear then going on a course or joining a club is perhaps the first stepping-stone, since they will be able to provide all the required gear. That way you can get advice on what is best for you before investing too much hard earned cash.
